Winepress - New bylaw pushes recycling
Circular Wine Group workshop explores the impact of the new waste bylaw
A NEW bylaw approved by Marlborough District Council last month will make it harder and more expensive to dump recyclable waste at the Blenheim landfill. The Waste Management and Minimisation Bylaw 2025 came into force on September 1 and gives staff more control over what gets through the landfill gates. Mark Lucas, MDC solid waste manager, says the objective of the new bylaw is to manage the volumes of waste going to landfill. The faster the Blenheim landfill fills up, “We will not accept anything into landfill where there are facilities in Marlborough to recycle it.” Mark Lucas the more it costs ratepayers and users to cover expenses including the government’s waste levy (based on tonnage), the emissions trading scheme liability (for greenhouse gases emitted during decomposition) and constructing more landfill space.
