Environmental Benefits
New Zealanders dump an estimated 1 million (xxxx) tonnes of CCA treated timber posts every year into landfill.
Before Repost, large scale recycling or repurposing options for CCA treated timber posts were non-existent in New Zealand. Many were buried, burnt with small numbers reused by farmers with the 14 trellis clips and nails remaining in them. Repost came about because founder Greg’s own father had been doing exactly that on his farm for decades.
The commercial scale aspect of Repost is what has turned the tide on this waste issue, by allowing a cost effective waste processing solution for the posts through their portable hydraulic clip/nail removal machines. This system has revolutionised Viticulture waste practices and implemented a new sustainable solution in their industries goal to be zero waste to landfill by 2050.
Repost has proved there is a substantial market and appetite for recycled CCA treated timber products in NZ.
Repost has transformed the CCA treated timber post throwaway economy into one where waste is a resource that can be re-circulated, and the carbon lifecycle of the wood can be continued to be stored and locked up. It closes the loop of one industry (Viticulture) does with their waste by proving that material can be a useful resource for another (Ag sector).
In its short life, Repost has already achieved remarkable milestones. Since is creation in early 2021 to July 2024, it diverted over 6571 tonnes of CCA post waste including over 420 tonnes of recovered cyclone timber for donations back into the rural community through Federated Farmers. Absent of Repost, all that cyclone CCA timber waste would have ended up in our landfills.
The domestic market for wooden posts exceeds 200,000 tonnes per annum, Repost has the potential to make a huge continued impact in providing a low-cost sustainable fence posts market for those on a budget and/or seeking to support a business promoting value and longevity of second hand wooden posts.
Repost has addressed a rural social need in creating a low-cost fence post market allowing those on limited budgets to still have access to fence posts to enable effective stock management, pasture production and riparian fencing among.
